In 2003, at the Philadelphia meeting of the Association of American Geographers, the session ‘Places of (P) leisure, but Where’s the Pain? Sexualities, Space and Power’explored the sexual (ized)‘stuff’of daily lives. Recognizing queer theory’s emphasis on the fluidity and multiplicity of sexualities, the papers in this session argued that questions of power continue to bother and trouble these often playful and yet important textual ventures. If relations of power (re) produce, as well as being structured by social norms, regulations and institutions, then we need to explore both the practices of power and their manifestations. The session asked how abstract questions of power and the fluidity and possibilities of discursive analysis might be (re) integrated with the stuff and spaces of daily life.
