Combining payment systems with mobile phones finally provides consumers with a solution to each of the five payment scenarios: stationary merchant automat, stationary merchant person, electronic commerce (e-commerce), mobile commerce (m-commerce), and customer-to-customer. Although an object of study for more than a decade, and predicted to be one of the future's most successful mobile services, mobile payments (m-payments) have achieved varying degrees of success. The purpose of this paper is to contextualise m-payments and examine existing research relating activity to m-payments in order that gaps for future adoption research can be identified. A total of 94 existing academic publications relating to m-payments were examined and grouped into three streams of research.
