Preceding chapters have shown that non-consensual sex is experienced by significant percentages of young people in developing countries, and that these experiences have major adverse health and social consequences. These chapters also highlight the fact that programmes and policies have rarely taken into consideration the extent to which such experiences may contribute to the compromised sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and youths. The subject of non-consensual sex is indeed sensitive and thus far few researchers have explored its prevalence, correlates or consequences. In view of the dearth of precedent, chapters in this volume are pioneering, and have assembled a rare profile of what is known about non-consensual sexual experiences of young people in developing countries. Findings presented in this volume come from a variety of studies: intensive explorations of small and sometimes unrepresentative samples, as well as from large surveys based on more representative samples of youth. These studies have adopted varying definitions of non-consensual sexual experiences, ranging from a narrow focus on rape or incest to a broader perspective that includes, for example, sex through deception and threats, and unwanted sexual touch. The sensitivity of the issue also makes the reliability of responses, particularly from surveys, difficult to assess. The findings discussed here may reflect no more than the tip of the iceberg in terms of the magnitude of experiences and the extent to which coercive behaviour is normatively accepted in many settings.
