Developmental phonological disorders are a group of developmental language learning disorders of unknown aetiology, occurring at a phonological level, and manifested in the use of abnormal speech patterns, by children, impairing their general intelligibility. This is one of a series of papers arising from an eYcacy study of a treatment model for developmental phonological disorders proposed and tested by Bowen (1996).
‘PACT’, the name we have coined for the current therapy approach, is an acronym for ‘parents and children together’, and reflects our belief that children with phonological disorders should be guided along the normal developmental route in solving their intelligibility problems, with parents and significant others taking an active role in management.
