Ionic liquids (ILs) are well-known for their carbon dioxide (CO2) capture properties. The impregnation or encapsulation of various materials attracts applications for CO2 capture due to the hybrid characteristics of materials and ILs. ILs on their own are faced with the problem of high viscosity; however, their diluted use onto materials significantly reduces this problem. The low CO2 absorption rate and difficulties in solvent regeneration can also be overcome by using encapsulated ionic liquid (ENIL) systems. Currently, studies on CO2 capture using ENILs are still limited to the basic absorption behavior of the absorbent. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the most recent literature available on ENILs for CO2 capture including preparation of ENILs, characterization, thier reaction kinetics, CO2 solubility, CO2 selectivity and regeneration studies.
