METHODS A PubMed search for (“social media” AND [guidelines OR recommendations OR “best practice”]) and recursive use of PubMed’s “similar articles” function was used to identify existing journal publications on the subject and authors manually reviewed the results to identify those representing statements by medical societies of a national or international nature, regardless of specialty. Additionally, because many such society guidelines are in organization documents rather than journals, the Google search engine was used in January and February 2015 to locate guidelines published by major medical organizations, as informed by the knowledge of the authors and their correspondents; given the difficulty locating existing literature, no formal systematic review was attempted.
