Artificial lipid mono- and bilayers have been used extensively to study the basic principles of self-organized molecular layers especially in the context as models of biological membranes. In particular, the incorporation of proteins in a functionally active state in lipid bilayers, has enabled the elucidation ofstructure-function relationships of many biologically important membrane proteins under defined conditions. 1-4
