For too long, discussions of anarchism have suffered from a mixture of ignorance and doctrinaire dismissal by anyone who wasn’t one. In recent times, this has begun to change, though many of the old sectarian habits are, unfortunately, still very much alive. Science & Society should be commended on its recent special issue focused on Marxism and anarchism, as should its contributors, many of whom have produced excellent discussions on the points of contact and conflict between these two traditions. Still, a number of the contributions contain statements and assumptions which are simply false, and easily shown to be so by reference to the writings and practices of the historical anarchist movement and its thinkers.
