Aims
The VITAE project was commissioned by DfES to investigate factors contributing to variations in teachers’ effectiveness at different phases of their careers, working in a range of schools in different contexts. The aim was to identify those factors which contributed to these variations and why teachers do, or do not, become more effective over time. The scope of this research is internationally unique. It involved both primary and secondary teachers of different age and experience, working in a range of schools, over a three year period. It examined influences upon and between their professional and personal lives and relations between these and their effectiveness in terms of pupil attainment. The research took place between 2001-5, a time of continuing educational policy changes in England which affected teachers’ work.
