Background
Few studies have examined how the endocannabinoid (eCB) system is impacted by stress following traumatic injury. The current study examined serum levels of circulating eCBs N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) in response to isometric exercise (hand grip) challenge in recently traumatically injured adults. We explored if exercise-induced changes in eCBs varied with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression symptoms.
Methods
Participants included mostly racial or ethnic minority adults who had recently been traumatically injured (eg, by a motor vehicle crash). We employed a hand-grip challenge at 3-months (n= 65) and 6-months (n= 67) post injury, with blood draws before and after.
Results
