Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUSTBNA) has technically evolved into a widely accepted diagnostic tool since its inception in the early 1990s. Transbronchial needle aspiration serves to obtain diagnostic tissue specimens with real-time direct visualization during sampling (1, 2). In contrast to “gold standard” mediastinoscopy, this procedure offers a minimally invasive approach to accessing mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes. EBUS-TBNA is now an established routine procedure in the staging of lung cancer. Several studies have reported a high diagnostic yield in nodal staging of non-small cell lung cancer with a pooled sensitivity of 0.93 and specificity 1.0 (3).
