I dedicate this work to my mother Susan Wanjiku Mugo, for being a pillar throughout my life, for inspiring me to conduct this research study and for fighting all odds to live, against the many challenges life had to offer. I also dedicate this work to my late father Cyrus Mugo Maathai, who laid a foundation for us in the family and left a legacy in all of us.
