Background: Studies from the early 2000s have shown that people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to those without HIV. Changes in antiretroviral therapies (ART) and increased use of CVD preventive therapies including statins may have reduced the excess of risk for CVD events among people living with HIV.
Objective: Compare the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke between people with and without HIV in the current era.
Methods: Retrospective cohort study of adults ≥21 years of age with commercial or supplemental Medicare health insurance in the MarketScan database. HIV was defined by ≥1 inpatient diagnosis for HIV or ≥2 pharmacy fills for ART between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015.
