Most family mediators believe that it is crucial for clients and mediators to understand that therapy and mediation are distinct activities. The client who has completed therapy has accomplished something very different from the client who has completed mediation. Arriving at a mediated agreement is different from therapeutic treatment for the problems that led to the conflicts that drew the family into mediation, and completing therapy that was initiated because of a particular conflict is different from resolving the conflict through mediation.
