METHODS:
COPD according to three definitions: 1) self-reported diagnosis of chronic bronchitis or emphysema; 2) self-reported symptoms of significant phlegm production or wheezing and ten pack-years smoking history; 3) self-reported use of bronchodilators and ten pack-year smoking history. Subject ethnicity was grouped into Caucasian, African-American and Latino based on self-reported information. The prevalence and the rate ratio (RR) were calculated in each ethnic category relative to the first definition. From 1999 to 2008, we identified 15,526 subjects. Of these, 7654 (49.3%) were Caucasian, 3070 (19.8%) were African American, RESULTS:
3703 (23.9%) were Latino and 1099 (7.1%) self-identified as “other” or did not report ethnicity. The prevalence of potential COPD was 8.9% based on self-reported diagnosis, 16.7% based on chronic symptoms and smoking history and 2.0% based on medication use …
