The paper presents a review of work on packed beds for heat storage. The theoretical basis for the description of a packed bed is outlined and attention is drawn to the approximations and assumptions which translate the thermo-fluid theory into workable methods-both analytical and numerical. The results of experimental work are presented together with methods of testing. While the main emphasis of the paper is on the application of rock beds to solar heating installations, lessons are drawn from other applications. Based on the reviewed material, assessments and recommendations for further work are made.
