Background
During the past decade, male involvement has been recognized as a priority area for the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programmes [1]. The male partner plays a role in terms of a woman's risk of acquiring HIV [2] and in terms of her utilization of the PMTCT programme: for the mother to test for HIV [3‐6], for the mother to return for the result [6], for the couple to use condoms [7, 8], for the mother to receive medication [6, 7, 9] and for her to follow the infant feeding advice given [7, 9‐13].
