Driven from the principles of the Water Framework Directive--WFD (EEC, 2000) the scientific community has been largely engaged in developing and testing classification schemes, tools and indicators for assessing the Ecological Quality Status (EcoQ) of coastal and transitional waters. Among the basic biological elements, on which classification is based is the macrozoobenthic invertebrates.
