In the paper some results concerning the positional analysis and synthesis of the mechanism of a sucker rod pumping unit are presented. The stroke of a conventional sucker rod pumping unit is determined in an analytical form depending on the lengths of the component links, using the powerful functions for symbolical calculus integrated in Maple program. The influence of the variation of the length of the crank on the stroke value is particularly analyzed. An algorithm that permits the calculus of the length of the crank when the value of the stroke is imposed is also presented. Finally, some interesting simulation results in the case of C 640D-365-144 pumping unit are presented.
