Two different populations of the marine sponges Cliona copiosa, collected in two different sites of the Mediterranean sea, were examined for polyoxygenated sterols. C. copiosa from the bay of Naples contained 5ot-cholestane-3B, 5, ß-triol [1] and the new trihy-droxysterols (22£)-5c (-cholest:-22-ene-3 ß, 5, ß-triol [2],(22£, 245)-24-methyl-5ot-cholest-22-ene-3ß, 5, 6ß-1 [31,(22£, 24£)-24-)-5-<: 1 5-22--3ß, 5, ß-triol [4],(24£)-24-0)-5-<: 1 5 3-3ß, 5, ß-triol [5], and (24')-24-)-5-<: 1 5 3-3ß, 5, ß-triol [6], The population collected from Marsala lagoon, Sicily, contained only sterols 1, 5, and 6. The structures of these compounds were deduced by analysis of spectral data. Partial synthesis of compounds 1, 5, and 6 confirmedthe structure assignment.
