3). Polyhydroxylated sterolsulfates have been reported in sponges of the Halichondriidae family (4—8), whereas Dictyoceratid sponges contain uncommon 7-polyhy-droxylated sterols (9—15). Sponges are also the source of polyhydroxylated 9, 11-secosterols (16) and 5, 6-secosterols (17, 18). As part of our continuing researches on polyol sterols (11, 12, 14, 17, 18), we report the isolation and the structural elucidation of six new tetrahydroxylated sterols from thesponge Spongia officinalis L.(order Dic-tyoceratida, family Spongiidae).
