Conclusions: mHFD exposure resulted in an increase in inflammatory cytokines and markers of neuronal development in offspring brain, dependent on the maternal microbiome. We speculate that maternal diet interacts with the maternal microbiome to increase immune activation in the fetal circulation and brain which affects neurogenesis. Further studies may provide therapeutic options to improve neurodevelopment in preterm infants.
