简介
The author suggests that relative-clause attachment differs from other kinds of attachment because it involves at least 2 kinds of processes, the attachment of the relative clause to the current partial phrase marker and the resolution of the relative pronoun. The rest of the chapter is then devoted to the argument that there is no need for any specialized parsing account for modifiers per se, and that there is surely no need to give up universal parsing principles in favor of purely statistical approaches. The authors argue that relative-clause attachment is special because it includes the syntactic attachment of a modifier to the current partial phrase referent. Different partial processes for ambiguity resolution may be tuned according to the usefulness and consistency of the information available from the input.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
