The National diabetes Prevention Program (NdPP) is the most widely available evidence-based intervention to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. This translation of a highly successful clinical trial1 seeks to prevent or delay diabetes through moderate weight loss in a year-long group-based class or online program. As little as 5% weight loss has been shown to reduce diabetes incidence. The NdPP works well for those who complete the program, but lower than ideal enrollment and engagement rates are a major concern. The Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CdC) currently estimates that 86 million US adults have prediabetes, 2 and many more have risk factors such as overweight and obesity. Thus, we urgently need to find strategies to engage at-risk individuals in diabetes prevention efforts.
