Background
The neurodegenerative process of Alzheimer's disease (AD) may begin decades before symptom onset, prompting interest in primary prevention in midlife. Much of AD risk appears to derive from environmental exposures, including “modifiable lifestyle factors”. Multi-domain behavioral interventions are needed in middle-aged persons to support positive behavioral changes to lower AD incidence.
Methods
We conducted a six-month pilot RCT of a multi-domain intervention to encourage healthy lifestyle behaviors with a focus on lowering AD risk in 146 participants. Intervention included a custom smartphone app disseminating evidence-based information and collecting behavioral data in six domains. To examine change among those with highest cardiovascular risk (n= 70), we selected those with a risk score>= 2 (Goff et al., 2014).
