As recently as the late 1980s it would have seemed highly improbable that the closing decade of the twentieth century, although at the time eagerly anticipated as the'decade of the brain', would turn out to be the decade in which the philosophy of psychiatry was to make a dramatic international come-back. With hindsight, there were early signals of the coming renaissance. For those wedded to an exclusively'brain disease'model of biological psychiatry, the developments of the 1990s may seem not only improbable but retrogressive, a back-sliding to pre-scientific ways of thinking. There is, though, a clear historical precedent for the emergence of philosophy of psychiatry at a time of rapid advances in the neurosciences, in the work of no less a figure than one of the founders of modern scientific psychiatry, and the guiding spirit of this book, the great German philosopher-psychiatrist, Karl Jaspers.(PsycInfo Database …
