Ethical and legal norms have been critical for marketing pharmaceutical products. Reaching out directly to patients for promoting drugs has been an anathema globally and is an illegal act even today barring two nations—USA and New Zealand. This rational policy, however, has been rendered futile with the advent of internet-based technologies. Patients today, in increasingly large numbers, are exploring online health information, including those served by pharmaceutical marketers. This development has been welcomed as well as has raised cudgels by the various stakeholders. Reason being the benefits and the challenges it brings in simultaneously.
