2 studies were conducted to identify and develop a measure of dimensions of temperament which are continuous in the behavioral repertoire from early childhood to young adulthood. In Study 1 expert raters categorized over 400 items representing 1 of the 9 categories of the New York Longitudinal Study. 89 items, placed into 1 of the 9 categories by at least 8 of the 9 raters, were identified as applicable from early childhood to young adulthood. In Study 2, 1,386 subjects from 3 age groups (early childhood, middle-to-late childhood, and early adulthood) responded to these items. Items not showing sufficient and similar variability in each group were eliminated. Factor analyses of the remaining 42 items, done in each age group separately, revealed that a 5-factor model fit the data well.
