Background
Physical inactivity, obesity and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) risk factors are associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. We investigated the short and long-term effects of a PA program on the PA and body composition of individuals at risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Methods
Men and women aged 60 years and older with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or subjective memory complaints (SMC) and at least 1 CVD risk factor were recruited from an observational trial The Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle Flagship Study of Aging (AIBL) to participate in the AIBL Active trial. Participants were randomized to a PA or control group for 24 months. The PA intervention was a home-based walking program with a target of 150 minutes/week of moderate PA, individualized to the participant's baseline PA and revised every 6 months.
