The status of the body within the dominant Western intellectual tradition has largely been one of absence or dismissal. This chapter briefly traces that feminism has long seen its own project as intimately connected to the body, and responds to the masculinist convention by producing a variety of times incompatible theories, which attempt to take the body into account. The association of the body with gross, unthinking physicality marks a further set of linkages - to black people, to working class people, to animals, and to slaves. Feminist theory has faced the challenge of addressing the ways in which these dimensions - of race and of class, for example - intersect to constitute particular ways of seeing, and of devaluing, bodies.
