In this study, two different bleaching agents-sodium hypochlorite and oxygen gas, were used to bleach soda-anthraquinone and Kraft-anthraquinone pulps produced from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) and kenaf. The bleachability of the pulps was examined based on kappa number and pulp viscosity. The results showed that EFB soda-anthraquinone pulps had greater kappa number reduction (24-53%) in comparison to the Kraft-anthraquinone pulps (19-46%) under hypochlorite treatments. Conversely, with the same bleaching treatment, kenaf soda-anthraquinone pulps (7-30%) demonstrated lower kappa number reduction than kenaf Kraft-anthraquinone pulps (15-31%). Meanwhile, in comparison between two pulps, the EFB chemical pulps showed higher kappa number reduction than kenaf chemical pulps.
