The aim of the present study was to investigate pragmatic skills in a sample of aphasic patients, and to provide an overview of their communicative abilities and impair‑ments. We used the Assessment Battery for Communication (ABaCo). ABaCo consists of five evaluation scales and is able to assess, both in compre‑hension and in production, the different ex‑pressive modalities of communication‑lin‑guistic, extralinguistic, paralinguistic–as well as social appropriateness and conversa‑tional abilities. The battery was administered to 13 aphasic patients and to a control group. The results show that patients per‑formed worse than control in the linguistic, extra‑linguistic, paralinguistic and conversa‑tional scales. Social appropriateness is, in‑stead, relatively preserved.
