Influenza is a significant public health issue. Annual influenza-associated deaths range from 3,000 to 49,000 according to recent estimates, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year for respiratory illnesses and heart conditions associated with seasonal influenza infections. Immunization is the most effective method for preventing infection from influenza and possible hospitalization or death. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all people $6 months of age receive annual influenza vaccination. In addition, vaccination of all health-care personnel (HCP) is a particular focus of recommendations by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other health-care and public health agencies and professional organizations.
