The pursuit of novel drug delivery systems has continued over decades to maximize therapeutic efficacy and minimize undesirable side effects. Nanotechnology has shown great promise to revolutionize the field of drug delivery by providing better encapsulation and bioavailability, controlled release, and lower toxicity. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), a class of nanomaterials responding to magnetic manipulation, are one of the key areas for innovation. In this chapter, we introduce the principles of MNPs in drug delivery and describe how they are synthesized and functionalized for treating a broad range of diseases.
