Mycorrhizal associations between plant roots and soil fungi have been first described in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Together with the fact, that they are present in most terrestrial plants and have wide positive effects for their nutrition and adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses, the fascinating and complex model of symbiosis that mycorrhizas represent has stimulated their rational investigation both in basic science and for application purposes in agriculture, forestry and more recently for nature conservation and ecosystem restoration issues.
