Objectives
Training and maintenance of clinical competence are essential to effective and safe quality patient care. There is broad support for competency-based education and training, but has not been systematically studied in the area of abortion provision.
Methods
As part of a multisite prospective evaluation study, we are testing a standardized competency-based curriculum and training plan in early aspiration abortion care with a convenience sample of 60 CNMs, NPs and PAs. Knowledge attainment is measured by written exam after completion of case-based curriculum requirements. Each trainee completes a minimum of 40 procedures over six clinical days under direct physician trainer supervision. Daily and final competency assessments on patient comfort, procedural completeness, speed and ability to identify problems are completed by both the trainer and trainee.
