简介
The author utilizes the critical race theory constructs of interest convergence (Bell, 1980) and “looking to the bottom”(Matsuda, 1987) as frameworks for understanding current issues around voting rights and electoral law. As legislation aimed to suppress voter turnout becomes more widespread, it is important for social studies educators to approach this issue in history and government classes with an appreciation for the exclusionary history of voting access in the United States and how this legislation impacts those most vulnerable in society. By surveying the current debates over voting rights and examining the history of voting access in the United States, the author calls for social studies educators to integrate interest convergence analysis and the epistemology of “the bottom” in their teaching of these topics.
