In this chapter, the author attempts to summarize current perspectives and findings on the self-conscious emotion, highlighting key controversies facing researchers in this field. Shame, guilt, embarrassment, and pride are members of a family of" self-conscious emotions." Each involves, as a central feature, some form of self-reflection and self-evaluation. The self-conscious emotions are not only intimately connected to the self. They are also intimately connected to our relationships with others. In sum, when considering self-conscious emotions, both theory and empirical research have focused a great deal on interpersonal aspects of these emotions. Some of the common themes shared by psychologists interested in self-conscious emotions include the interpersonal contexts in which these emotions arise, the roles they play in relationships with others, and their implications for long-term social adjustment.
