We read with great interest this article on the ‘history of ideas’ approach to ethics education in the medical curriculum, and agree with the significance of incorporating pragmatic conceptions in medical education. In particular, the maieutic approach to engaging the ethical sense of students through dialogue in relation to clinical cases is a valuable tool for teaching ethical reasoning and consequent decision-making. We also appreciate the reference to John Gregory’s lectures as Chair of Medicine at the Edinburgh School of Medicine and wholeheartedly agree that moral sense (especially in the context of a person’s innate abilities) is a subset of the Scottish school of common sense (Dowie Citation 2023).
