Background
The cause of device-related thrombosis (DRT) after LAA occlusion (LAAO) is unclear. This study aims to assess the flow region around LAAO devices to identify potential predictors for DRT.
Methods
The patient cohort consisted of 38 patients who underwent LAAO at Mayo Clinic, Aarhus University, and Copenhagen University Hospitals. Nineteen developed DRT and 19 did not (control) and matching was based on age and sex. FEops (Belgium) deployed LAAO devices in the patient models like clinical deployment. The patients had WATCHMAN (n= 29, Boston Scientific) and Amulets (n= 9, Abbott, USA). Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) was performed. CFD indices calculated included time average wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP), and high oscillatory and low magnitude shear (HOLMES).
