Substance use is among the most critical problems facing college students in the United States. 1, 2 Recent epidemiologic research indicates approximately 26% of male and 19.2% of female full-time college students report current illicit drug use. 3 Alcohol use on college campuses has also been a significant concern for decades 1 and current estimates indicate that most college students engage in this behavior (79%). 4 Although certain substances have recently decreased in popularity (eg, cigarette smoking), the rates of many other substances have remained stable or increased over time.
