The endocannabinoid system (ECS), with its ligands and receptors, is a complex neuromodulatory system throughout the central and peripheral nervous system that controls various physiologies, including brain functions. In addition, gastrointestinal, immune, and endocrine systems also stay under the influence of the ECS. The dysfunctional ECS has been attributed to various neuropsychological and neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, the antagonists of CBR1 have shown the potential in decreasing schizophrenia. On the other hand, CBR1 knockouts have reported increased levels of corticosterone which were alleviated by the administration of CBR1 agonists in depression. ECS dysfunction is also reported in neurodegenerative conditions as well.
