SOX9, expression in both columnar epithelium and hyperplastic squamous epithelium was reduced in the MEKi treated esophagus. Conclusions: MEKi ameliorated the columnar metaplasia and replaced it with the squamous epithelium. The length of Barrett’ s’ esophagus correlates with the carcinogenic rate of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The shortening of columnar epithelium by MEKi treatment may suppress the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma. MEKi may transdifferentiate columnar epithelium into squamous epithelium through sup-pressing SOX9.
