Past research on marriage suggests that a significant number of M~ ori had a non-M~ ori partner. Data from the 1996 census indicate that such ethnic intermarriage is continuing. Around half of partnered M~ ori men and women have non-Maori partners. Amongst those partnered M~ ori affiliating only with the Maori ethnic group, a third have n on-M~ ori partners. In a househo ld setting, such intermarriage potentially brings together the “two worlds” of M~ ori and non-M~ ori.
