Introduction/Rationale for Treatment Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) have persistent lung infections necessitating the frequent use of antibiotics for pulmonary exacerbations. Some respiratory pathogens have intrinsic resistance to currently available antibiotics, and any pathogen may acquire resistance over time, posing a challenge to CF care. In the current era of increasing antibiotic resistance and limited antibiotic discovery, adjunct therapies hold promise. Gaseous nitric oxide (NO) has antimicrobial properties that are just starting to be elucidated and offers a potential adjunct therapy to those with highly resistant pathogens and few therapeutic options. This is the first report of using intermittent high-dose inhaled NO therapy in an individual with CF and pulmonary colonization with Burkholderia multivorans.
