Background
Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) stands as the foremost cause of death and disability in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Despite its high prevalence, a comprehensive examination of its burden is lacking.
Methods
Using the Global Burden of Disease tool, we assessed IHD and its attributable risk factors prevalence, incidence, mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) by age, gender, year, and location in LAC over three decades.
Results
Between 1990 and 2019, IHD prevalence increased dramatically by 158%, deaths surged by 79%, and DALYs rose by 60%. Although age-standardized rates decreased, there were notable exceptions: Jamaica recorded a 10% increase in incidence, Nicaragua saw a 39% rise in mortality, and the Dominican Republic observed a striking 31% surge in DALYs.
