Background noise such as what may be found in open-plan offices frequently impairs performance on cognitively demanding tasks (Banbury & Berry, 2005), is associated with increased employee fatigue (Jahncke, et al. 2011) and absenteeism (Clausen, et al. 2013), and may increase susceptibility to chronic stress-related health problems (Kristiansen, 2010). Such effects may be especially pronounced in individuals who are particularly sensitive to noise (Shepherd, et al. 2010). These findings suggest that working in office noise can be physiologically stressful, but the link between the effects of noise on immediate performance and chronic stress has remained elusive. The properties of office noise most commonly found to be disruptive to work performance are irrelevant speech and ringing telephones (Banbury & Berry, 2005) which are sounds that may either (or both) attract attention and demand cognitive …
