The Solanaceae family has more than 90 genera and about 3000 species scattered around the globe. Many species are important as food and medicinal plants, spices, and ornamentals. One of the many new plant breeding technologies (NPBTs) that have been shown to have a visible effect on crop productivity is CRISPR-Cas (clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeats and Cas for CRISPR-associated proteins). It is possible to employ CRISPR-Cas as a method to precisely modify Solanaceae crops, which can be used to increase agricultural productivity and the availability of nutrients. Several agronomically important crops, such as potato, tomato, eggplant, and, more recently, pepper, serve as a basis for developing CRISPR-Cas tools and defining standards for other crops within the Solanaceae family.
