The use of the term mentor has become part of the language of many organisations of late. Vance (1982) captures the trend well,'The mentor relationship has fired the imagination of diverse occupational groups and professions in the last few years.'Wrightsman (1981) noted over 10 years ago that this popularity has been accompanied by a lack of understanding and this remains the case despite the term's increased use in a wide variety of areas such as business, nursing, the social services and initial teacher training (ITT). Despite the growth of interest there has been relatively little written in the UK about what a mentor is. This work will attempt: i) to examine the roots of the concept of the mentor and to review the literature to illustrate the diversity of occupations that have sought to utilise the mentor relationship, ii) to review the use of mentoring in education and in ITT in particular, iii) to suggest a view of mentoring …
