: This is the first of a series of contributions by Doctors Thomas Wade and A. Bernard Ackerman on typical, common and variant expressions of cutaneous malformations and neoplasms. Many skin diseases have uniform or exceedingly characteristic histologic appearances, but even those that ordinarily have pathognomonic histologic characteristics often enough have variant appearances that may cause confusion and may lead to diagnostic and, consequently therapeutic, error. The purpose of this series of presentations, then, will be to illustrate and notate the typical, the common, and the many variants of histologic patterns and findings that may be seen in several dysplasias and neoplasias.
